Green Lantern debuts at Six Flags Great Adventure

MAY
21

Prior to Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom’s closure in 2009, the park confirmed that they would be removing Chang for what they called a “waterpark expansion”.  Shortly after, the entire park was no more.  However, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure! And Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey swept up the former park’s crowning jewel, Chang.  In preparation for the new ride, the Great American Scream Machine was removed in July 2010 to make way for the new, old ride.

In September of last year, Six Flags unveiled plans to install the new coaster on Great American Scream Machine’s former location.  The coaster would also be tied to the famous DC Comics character, The Green Lantern (which just happened to have a movie come out around the same time the ride would debut).  The changes were to be minimal with the track painted green along with black supports; the ride layout itself was to remain unchanged.

And finally, this weekend marks the first weekend that Green Lantern: Stand Up to Your Fear has been open to the public.  From rider reviews, the ride had no problems with the move at it is still one of the best Bolliger & Mabillard stand-ups on the planet. While it may not have quite the airtime like The New Texas Giant or the amount of effects as X2, it is still a solid coaster.  And best yet, the area below the coaster received gravel so it doesn’t look like it was built directly on a parking lot.

Be sure to check out the POV in the video above, and some off ride B-roll footage below.  What do you think of The Green Lantern? Leave a comment with your Park Thoughts below.

Sad, GASM was my very first vertical loop coaster. How does this standup compare to the one at Kentucky Kingdom?

Can’t wait! I am most likely going to SFGAdv this summer, so hopefully I can ride it :D

It’s the exact same ride just with a new paint job.

Epic theming Six Flags, you’ve done it again!

Epic? I’m not sure I would use those words to describe a ride with some gravel, a cardboard fighter jet, and a big shiny lantern.  The cut outs sure do put the theming over the edge now don’t they!

I’m just hopeful all of this will last more than 1-2 years and the tie ins will stay with the ride for the for-seeable future (and considering how this is a DC comic, I do believe the theming will stick unlike Wiggles World/Big Spin)

I really love the layout of this coaster, it has a few elements that you won’t see on a typical B&M. I think it was better themed when it was known as “Chang” though. Now it looks like a simple parking lot coaster with cutouts around it.
I am a comic fan myself so I like this coaster more now then I originally did.
I would give this a 6 out of 10 if there was a rating system.

Does anybody know when green lantern comes out?

What theming did it have as Chang?

There’s much more theming than just a few cardboard cut-outs. It’s kind of hard to comment on the theming if you’ve never been to the park, right?

The entrance plaza for the ride has a huge cut-out of Green Lantern. There’s a huge lantern on a plaza with the Green Lantern emblem concreted into the ground. Once you step into the queue house, the story of Hal Jordan / The Green Lantern is explained on comic book panels, like Bizarro. A figher jet prop is on the ground under one of the corkscrews, themed as Hal Jordan’s plane. Approaching the station, you see that it is themed as an airplane hangar, with the Ferris Airline logo on top of the station. Once under the station, signs explain to you why the loop is yellow (Parallax), and signs tell you that you have been asked to join the battle against Parallax. Green Lantern tells you to recite the Green Lantern oath and join the battle, and you are allowed to walk up the stairs into the station. The station has the Ferris Airline logo inside as well, with “Where Courage Takes Flight” written above the tracks, and you read that as your train leaves the station, and goes onto the lift hill. Once on the lift hill, speakers blast the Green Lantern oath with dramatic music playing in the background, and you take off.

Once you leave the ride, you can see your “Flight Photos”. Also, I forgot to mention that the ride ops refer to riders as “pilots”, and instead of saying “Enjoy your ride on Green Lantern”, they say “Flight 0758 is ready for departure,” etc.

Next time, before you bash a ride’s theming, actually ride the ride first.
