In 2012, Six Flags Magic Mountain will add yet another world class thrill ride: Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom. Built on either side of the recently remodeled Superman: Escape from Krypton, these pair of drop towers will rise 400 feet, before dropping people back to earth while reaching speeds of 85 mph, making it both the tallest and fastest drop tower on the planet.

From the press release:

Fearless riders will be seated inside floorless gondolas on two vertical tracks flanking each side of the SUPERMAN: Escape from Krypton tower. Passengers on the gondolas will be pulled to the top of the tower, experience a brief pause before being released and dropped at speeds of up to 85 miles-per-hour. After five seconds of freefall, the gondola will be stopped by a sophisticated magnetic braking system just a few feet from the ground.

“Six Flags is known world-wide as the industry leader in delivering world-class thrills, and
Six Flags Magic Mountain is proud to be at the head of the pack, offering guests the biggest and the best,” said Bonnie Rabjohn, Six Flags Magic Mountain Park President. “We are excited to add another world record to our collection of record-breaking, first-on-the-planet attractions.”

Changing Magic Mountain’s legendary skyline, LEX LUTHOR: Drop of Doom will offer riders breathtaking panoramic views as they are lifted to the top of the tallest vertical drop ride ever built. Sitting eight abreast, riders will plummet 40 stories at an extreme speed before coming to a stop, all while the SUPERMAN: Escape from Krypton cars are blasted to the top of the same structure.

LEX LUTHOR: Drop of Doom is being manufactured exclusively for Six Flags Magic Mountain by Intamin AG of Switzerland.

Initial 2012 Thoughts:

Nothing to complain about here; this ride is going to be spectacular.  Imagine the launch on Xcelerator except vertical.  Essientally that is what Drop of Doom will be in terms of speed.  Plus, at 400 feet, the view is going to be spectacular.  Certainly going to be a great addition to the park for 2012, as it is always nice for the Magic Mountain to get some more (and much needed) flat rides.

Today Dollywood announced their new for 2012 addition, WILD EAGLE!  As rumors have long indicated, Wild Eagle will be a Bolliger & Mabillard Wing-Rider coaster in the Wilderness Pass area of the park.  The stats:

  • 210 foot lift hill
  • 130 foot drop
  • Top speed of approximately 61 mph
  • 4 Inversions: Loop, Zero-G Roll, Immelmann, Wing Over
  • 3,127 feet of track

An excerpt form the park’s press release:

Experiencing the freedom of flight, the new coaster’s innovative floorless design positions riders seated four abreast in a forward-facing position, with two riders actually seated on the “wings” along either side of the coaster’s track with nothing but air above and below them. “After the honor of the 2010 Applause Award, we knew that all eyes were on us at Dollywood to see what we’d do next,” Dolly Parton said. “Wild Eagle celebrates not only the majestic bald eagle but also my beautiful Smoky Mountains which folks will get a bird’s eye view of as they soar high above Dollywood. I’m just thrilled that Dollywood’s Wild Eagle is the only place in the entire country where folks can get their feathers ruffled on a coaster like this!”

Perched on the park’s highest peak, Wild Eagle rises 21 stories into the sky. Taking off from the Wilderness Pass area, riders experience the sensation of flight as the coaster’s massive track swoops and soars along a journey that measures 3,127 feet. Wild Eagle reaches a top speed of 61 miles per hour and maneuvers four inversions including a giant loop, a “zero-G” roll, and a giant flat spin.

Wild Eagle’s nearly two-and-a-half minute journey includes a plummeting 135-foot first drop. Located 210 feet above the coaster’s loading station, the ride provides spectacular views of the Smoky Mountains terrain below. Each coaster train consists of seven cars which carry four passengers for a total of 28 people per train. Each vehicle features an imposing bald eagle with piercing eyes and broad wings outstretched for flight.

Wild Eagle is the largest single capital investment in Dollywood’s 26-year history. The park’s development team is collaborating with Switzerland-based Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M), the world’s premier coaster manufacturer. Pioneers in ride technology, B&M has built 11 of the 20 highest-ranking steel coasters in the world, according to Amusement Today magazine.

The ride’s name celebrates the bald eagle, a raptor whose population has increased in recent years due largely to the efforts of the American Eagle Foundation (AEF). Headquartered at Dollywood for 20 years, the AEF is home to Eagle Mountain Sanctuary, a 1.5-million-cubic-foot natural outdoor aviary with the largest presentation of non-releasable bald eagles. Dollywood is one of the AEF’s largest benefactors, supporting the not-for-profit organization’s work to preserve and protect birds of prey.

Initial 2012 Thoughts:

Finally, we have the super-massive Wing-Rider we’ve been waiting for. While it does not have the unique-to-wing rider elements that will be featured on X-Flight at Six Flags Great America and The Swarm at Thorpe Park, Wild Eagle will no doubt be a spectacular experience.  What this Wing-Rider has the other two don’t: location, location, location.  Being perched amongst the Smokey Mountains, when the train crawls past the tree line on the lift hill, it will offer an unbelievable view that no other Wing-Rider has even come close to seeing.  Plus, with nothing above or below you, it will by far give the best sensation of flight soaring and through the trees.

Returning the to the topic of the layout, it is interesting to note that nothing on Wild Eagle that screams Wing-Rider.  No long-drawn out inline twists, or diving first drop, but instead a rather normal layout with the winged seats as an added bonus.  Which makes me wonder if this was originally planned to have a different seating style.  The ride does seem to resemble Wildfire from Dollywood’s sister park, Silver Dollar City.  I would not be surprised if some time during the planning process, the decision was made to change the trains to the current ones as they would create a more unique, and hopefully better experience.

However, there is really nothing to complain about.  The sheer size alone makes this, by my opinion, the best Wing-Rider yet.  AWing-Rider on a mountain! It’s hard not be amazing with a coaster style and location like that.  I continue to be increasingly pleased with how much success Bolliger & Mabillard is having with their new style.  Don’t wouldn’t be surprised if we see 3 more pop up next year.

Nice work Dollywood.  For more about Wild Eagle visit Dollywood2012.com

Invasion of the Windseekers continue with Kings Dominion announcing a Windseeker for 2012.  The announcement comes just weeks after Carowinds announced they will be adding a Windseeker to their 2012 line-up.  Kings Dominion appears to be an identical version of the Mondial model standing at 301 feet, 32 carriages of 2 passenger seats, and the elaborate lighting/audio package.  Kings Dominion brings the total Windseeker count to 6 for Cedar Fair parks.

In addition to Windseeker, Kings Dominion will also add Dinosaurs Alive! animatronic dinosaur park.  Occupying 6 acres, this interactive educational experience will be a 3,000 foot walk through including 36 dinosaurs, 3 of which of interactive.  However, just like the Kings Island version which opened one earlier this year, Dinosaurs Alive! will require an additional fee with park admission (fun eh?).  Dinosaurs Alive will be located near the Grizzly wooden coaster.

Cedar Point also announced they will add Dinosaurs Alive!, with similar statistics.  At Cedar Point, the attraction will be located on Adventure Island, under Millennium Force.  In order to create access to the island, the park will have to remove the Paddlewheel Excursions attraction, which has generated some public out roar on the park’s Facebook page.

I have to say, Kinzel is leaving a mess for Ouimet to clean up.  Mass purchasing dysfunctional attractions, and now installing lame, up-charge Dinosaurs at several park is not particularly a grand exit leaving a great impression.  Nice to see that Cedar Fair is turning into Six Flags of the early 00′s.  I am certainly looking forward to a management change.
