The part opened with it’s premier in the summer of 1986 during the Kentucky State Fair as part of the midway. Only a few of the buildings were finished at this time such as the main strip of Arcade buildings and the small Theatre, “The Plantation Playhouse” where they ran a premier show. Rides were brought in for the run of the fair as only one of the Kingdom’s rides were installed at the time. This was the beautiful Crystal Carrousel. This sat on the round platform as you entered the part and was surrounded by a fountain. This Carousel had hand paintings around it of different scenes from around Kentucky.

1987 was the first official season. The park was still small. There were three theatres, one indoor and two amphitheaters. Three shows, “Steppin Out” “Come Follow the Band” and “Sing Your Country Song” all ran about 6 times a day. There were also the “Dixie Land Dandies” that preformed on the Gazebo. The “Star” ride was the indoor roller coaster “Starchaser” with lighting and effects as strobes and fog.

Kentucky Kingdom did make it through it’s season in 1987 along with it’s fall season as well.
before going out of business. After closing there was actually an auction of everything including the rides and even some of the buildings. Then Ed Hart along with business owners many of them from around the area that had lost money when the original owners bankrupted formed an organization and then repurchased much of what had been auctioned and reopened the park.

Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom seemed to be an amazing park from the beginning. I wish I could of went there, but I never realized how great of a park it was. Its really going to suck to see deconstruction photos, if that is what they plan on doing. Hopefully they’ll move their coasters to other Six Flags Parks.
