Six Flags New Orleans unfortunately never opened after the horrible Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The park laied empty and abandoned for years with few failed plans to reopen. However now Six Flags New Orleans is slated to become a Nickelodean Universe.
With Nickelodean trying to branch outside of the television industry, this comes as no surprise that they are opening another theme park. Nickelodean teamed up with Southern Star Amusement who is licensing the rights to use the Nickelodean name and the characters featured on the channel. Not only will this bring in money for Southern Star Entertainment, but it provides a family tourist destination that will help with tourism in all of New Orleans; a win win situation.
Personally I think this is an excellent move. Not only do they have a set theme park already set to work with but they also have characters that will bring in kids and teens for the thrills. New Orleans is a great place as it will help the city recover and with a Final Four and Super Bowl commitment, this theme park may be expecting huge crowds assuming it does successful. However it will be interesting to see if it can reach its due opening date, whcih is late 2010.
